One of the quintessential delights of an English estate is a Bluebell wood - a dense copse of deciduous English trees such as Oak and Birch, under-planted with a generous carpet of bluebells (and other assorted spring-time bulbs). It evokes memories of the English countryside and many a ramble.
It is 100m long and runs from the main drive down to the lake and olive grove. Everything looks a little sad at present, what with it being winter, and the trees being newly-planted, but we have high hopes that in the fertile soil it wont take more than a couple of years to really get established.
We await the advent of Spring, when the dormant and sparse woody branches will burst forth into verdant splendour and we may get a glimpse of what it will look like in the fullness of time. One can hardly see the trees from a distance during Winter...
We used a combination of trees in shades of Blue and Silver and achieve the colour scheme we wanted: Silver Birches (Betula pedula), Weeping Silver Pears (Pyrus salicifolia pendula) and Bluebells (Hyacinthoides sps), with a planting of Plumbago and Alders on the other side of the walk.
