Welcome back to day 5 of our tour. Today we are sharing pictures of The Chatsworth suite. As with it's namesake, it is decorated in the English Baroque style, with red and gold being the predominant colours...
Above and below: The king-size four poster bed, which is currently having matching curtains sewn for it out of the same red and gold velvet damask that the window curtains are made of.
We had considered having a red carpet in this room, but are glad we went for a beige colour, as too much red would have been a bit oppressive. The walls were also originally to be papered in a red and gold damask pattern, but we ended up having them simply painted in a Resene colour called "Pohutakawa"
Above: I like the comfortable plush wingback chairs. You can just see the Picasso lithograph 'The Toreador" hanging above the wingback chair in the far corner. We have more art arriving from storage to be hung soon.
Below: A view of the fireplace, with a small writing desk in the far corner.
Below: A detail of the wall sconce hanging by the door. It holds 3 candles, but looks handsome without them.
Above and below: The en suite with its striking red marble and regency styled mirror and sconces.
I hope you enjoyed having a peek at this guest room. Tomorrow we will share photos of the Chinese styled Blenheim Suite.
Hello Lord Cowell,
ReplyDeleteFantastic! The room is exquisite and I agree that the carpet was a great choice. The detail of the rooma nd furniture really stand out much better then they would have on a red carpet. The marble in the bathroom is gorgeous. I hope you will let us see the bed when the hangings are done. It is beautiful.
Big hug

Yes, I shall take more photos once the additional art has arrived and the bed hangings are complete. I am on the look out at the moment for some stunning tassels / tie backs for all the curtains. The only examples we can find locally are exceptionally average. Does anyone know of a good place we could buy nice tassels and tiebacks from online?
DeleteSamuels and Sons trim. They regularly have sales on One Kings Lane.
DeleteDear Lord Cowell,
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! Every last detail is simply stunning.
Kind regards,
Catherine
Thank you for stopping by Catherine to see the progress. By the way - wonderful fireplace restoration over at In The Fields.
DeleteYour attention to detail is incomparable. So many choices finally coming together that you must be thrilled to see your hard work and efforts pay off. I think you made the right choice with the lighter carpet which keeps the room afloat, bravo!
ReplyDeleteThank you. We agree, and the beige colour of the carpet ties in nicely with the gold background of the curtain damask.
DeleteIs that a French door to the outside? If so I'm not sure whether it's ground level, or has a balcony. Both this and the bridal suite are very striking, and it must be a relief that it has all been completed, and you were able to hold your first wedding.
ReplyDeleteIt is a French door, of sorts. There is a small Juliet balcony outside, but due to regulations the balustrade must be 4 feet tall or the window must be 4 feet off the floor. Thus, we have made French Doors which split like stable doors with the top part opening over the height of the balustrade outside, and the lower part 4 foot off ground and not opening.
DeleteOh how it would be nice to have built in the days when landowners could build what they wanted on their own land, and regulations were few and far between.
