The Carriage House Building, comprises the Garage, Tack room, Country Store and Facilities on the ground floor and a 2 room self-contained loft on the 1st floor (2nd floor for American readers). We wanted it to have a continental appearance, neither particularly English or French.
There is a long tradition of carriage houses on large estates providing shelter for travellers' horses and carriages, and accommodation for the coach drivers and other servants in the same building. We thought it would be quaint to draw on this tradition for a 5th bedroom suite, one that was completely self-catering etc, for guests who may wish to enjoy a slightly more independent stay with us. It will also give us the chance to explore thoroughly rustic and country decorating themes which would be out of place inside the main house. We saw the house below on the blog Things that Inspire and loved the look of it, and thus modified it to come up with the model for the Carriage House above.

Exposed beams with a high ceiling into rafters, and tongue and groove paneling on the walls will give the loft a rustic feeling. The bed is made of wrought iron to look like leather (from And so to bed). The furnishing will concentrate on warm brown leather and neutral colours. There will be equestrian and hunting motifs through-out, with bridles and crops hanging in the entry vestibule and in the stair well.
Exterior Doors
The doors into the Garage and the Country Store on the ground floor will be segmental automated 'Carriage House' doors, resembling a traditional carriage house / stable door with strap hinges and stained wood panels:
