Which White?

It is time to choose our interior paint colours, and boy are there a lot of shades of white to choose from. We knew that we didn't want a harsh white, and most people would naturally choose an off-white for ceilings and walls these days. After looking through the Resene colour range (NZ's main paint company), we have settled on 'Double Alabaster' for the ceilings (3rd up, 2nd from right)...

We think that we will choose a slightly darker shade of off-white for the cornicing and skirting, and any wainscoting panels, and will look at having a colour made up for us for the interior walls, probably about 1/8th 'Willowbrook', as we made a paint colour for the outside render. It would be similar to 'Half Spanish White' (3rd down, left hand row).

Any suggestions?

  1. I'm sure whatever you choose will be lovely. Colors are always so hard mostly because there are so many choices -it's easy to get scared.

    1. Yes, there is a sense of trepidation given the vast array of choices. I guess we have found with so many things that in time only we will know what could have been and anyone else visiting will just see things as they are and enjoy them that way. Thank you for your reassurance.

  2. White is definitely the hardest colour to get right I think! I had no idea that Resene was the number 1 brand in NZ - we have it here, but I'd only ever used it for special paint finishes on Commercial projects, rather than house projects (it's not in the hardware stores, so not easily available). I'm sure whatever you pick will be spot on.

    1. Thank you Heidi. Whatever we choose will have to work with the darker shade for the walls and an in-between shade for the wainscoting and chair rail (dado). We will have to share some interim pictures for advice!

  3. Agree with Heidi, White is such a difficult colour to choose. We spent months trying to find the perfect shade so I sympathise with your dilemma. I know you'll come up trumps, as always.

  4. My goodness, white is a tough one. I'd suggest painting a large piece of sheetrock that you could carry about the room at various times of the day/night and see how you like the paint color, as you'll find that it changes in the various lighting situations.

Also, consider the final wall color and go from there. Best of luck with this fun (but often challenging) aspects of your project.

  5. It's so hard to pick a colour from a swatch and imagine it covering a whole surface. I'm sure the shade would affect the perceived height of the ceiling too. You seem to have an eye for colour and design anyhow so trust your instincts.
